Menaka Roy, a mother of two of Bhupatipur village, Munshirhat, Howrah district, was struggling with poverty along with her husband Pratap Roy. They were not even able to fulfill their basic needs. Her husband was a daily labourer with irregular income. In her words, “I was not sure whether I will be able to feed my children tomorrow or not”.
In 2011, she came to know about VFS from her neighbor. She got convinced that VFS provides micro-loans while empowering the borrowers to generate income of their own by providing various skilled-based training. Then she joined a self-help group and took a loan of Rs. 6000 from VFS, Munshirhat branch to start a business of making bamboo baskets. She purchases bamboos from 15 different markets and runs a wholesale business at the Munshirhat market. She has taken multiple cycles of loan from VFS for her business, totaling Rs. 85000. Her present business capital is Rs.150,000 . The business is growing and she has also involved her husband. Recently, she has bought a 5-katha land using the income from her business. Both her children are going to school, making her a proud businesswoman.
She is grateful to VFS for helping to fulfill her dreams.
